Honor has taken the wraps off its next-generation ‘number series’ in South Africa with the Honor 200 Pro and Honor 200 with a strong emphasis on portrait photography.

The Honor 200 Lite was launched earlier this month. The Chinese smartphone held an event in Bryanston, Johannesburg, on 24 July to showcase its new flagship, with the Honor 200 Pro model making its debut in SA.

Last year, it brought the Honor 90 and Honor 90 Lite models only to market. The Honor 200 Pro made its first appearance at the Hollywoodbets Durban July and was used to capture portrait shots of guests.

At the Johannesburg launch event, the company also announced a host of partnerships and collaborations, including fashion brands Galxboy and GQ Magazine.

Additionally, Honor revealed it was the official smartphone sponsor for the Esports World Cup currently taking place in Saudi Arabia.

Honor 200 Pro

It’s no surprise that the Honor 200 Pro flagship uses AI-powered software to bolster its 50MP Portrait Main Camera with its Super Dynamic H9000 Sensor that captures clear images while balancing light and shadows. It also features an additional 50MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens.

Honor says its 200 series stands out from the competition due to its partnership with Studio Harcourt, a Parisian portrait photography house, which it has co-engineered its AI Portrait Engine with.

The new photography mode is available under the ‘Portrait’ shooting mode and features Studio Harcourt’s signature effects: Vibrant, Colour and Classic. Honor says the mode will streamline a two-hour photoshoot process into a few simple steps.

The front cameras have optical image stabilisation, whereas the 50MP selfie cam has 2D face unlock. Both front and rear cameras shoot videos in 4K.

The 6.78-inch flagship 200 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 with a 3GHz CPU; 24GB (12GB+12GB) of RAM and 512GB of storage; and a 5200mAh battery.

It runs on Honor’s MagicOS 8.0 based on Android 14, featuring its AI-powered functions like Magic Portal, Magic Capsule, and Magic Ring for an enhanced user experience, as seen on the Magic V2 series.

Honor 200

The Honor 200 will have the same camera setup as the 200 Pro, but a marginally smaller screen at 6.7 inches.

It is powered by a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and has the same 5200Mah battery.

The Honor 200 will be available in white and black, whereas the 200 Pro will be available in blue and black. Both the 200 Pro and 200 have 5G capabilities with dual SIM, one of which is an eSIM.

It also supports WiFi, WiFi Direct, Bluetooth 5.3, Infrared Remote Control, a fingerprint sensor, and NFC. The charging port and headphone jack share the USB-C port.

Fred Zhou, CEO of Honor South Africa says Honor developed the Honor 200 Series to become the ultimate smartphone range for high-quality studio-level portrait photography.

We want to make cutting-edge technology more accessible to the public and redefine the future of mobile photography, which is why partnering with Studio Harcourt was a significant milestone for the brand.
