Xiaomi has introduced its new 14T series and its first foldable, the Mix Flip at a launch event in Berlin. Among other products it revealed were the Watch 2, Buds 5, Smart Band 9, X20 robot vacuum range, and new TVs.
Recharged was in attendance as a guest of Xiaomi South Africa. Here’s a quick look at some of the products we got to see at the experience zone.
The main flagship introduced was the Xiaomi 14T Pro in this new titan grey shade. It was launched alongside the 14T. I love the colour, and the new redesign. It feels solid in the hand, and has a 1.7mm narrow bezel.
The 14T Pro and 14T share the same Leica camera lenses, a 6.67-inch 1.5K 144Hz display, AI features and a 5000mAh battery. Unfortunately the 14T Pro is not coming to South Africa.
Xiaomi 14T with Gemini AI coming to SA
What is coming to South Africa very soon is the Xiaomi 14T, there will be an October launch event. It is powered by a MediTek Dimensity 8300-Ultra processor with 12GB of RAM and either 256 or 512GB of storage; has a Sony IMX906 sensor whereas the 14T Pro has a Light Fusion 900 sensor; and has 67W of fast charging. Unfortunately no 50W wireless charging like the 14T Pro.
The 14T has a trio of lenses on the rear, which is ‘co-engineered by Leica’. It comprises of a 50MP main lens, 50MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. All the lenses cover four focal lengths between 15mm and 100mm. There’s a 32MP selfie camera.
The Sony IMX906 sensor, according to Xiaomi, offers great dynamic range and noise reduction, making it suitable for low-light and night photography.
Outside of Google Pixel phones (which are not officially available in SA, just through grey imports) and Samsung Galaxy, the Xiaomi 14T series and their new Mix Flip will offer Google’s Circle to Search feature. It will include Google’s Gemini AI and a host of other AI features.
Its productivity, travel and creativity AI offerings include support in apps like translator, notes, recorder, subtitles, films, image editing and portrait shots.
Other features worth noting include dual SIM with eSIM support (will confirm if SA will have eSIM support), NFC, Infrared blaster, biometric unlocking with fingerprint and facial support, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, and an IP68 rating for splashes, water, and dust.
Xiaomi Buds 5 coming to SA
The Xiaomi Buds 5 will be launching in South Africa alongside the 14T. It features Harman AudioEFX tuning and dimensional audio, and according to Xiaomi, has Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless and Hi-Res Audio with 11mm dual magnetic drivers for powerful bass.
They also feature triple mics with AI noise cancellation, and supports active noise cancellation.
Each earphone weighs 4.2g and the total weigh inside the charging case is 45g. Each earphone has 35mAh batteries and the charging case has 480mAh. It supports a 10m range over Bluetooth 5.4.
Xiaomi Mix Flip, not confirmed for SA
The Mix Flip is a cute little flip phone, available in black and purple, just like the Oppo Find N2 Flip. This device is also not confirmed for SA. Xiaomi does not bring high-end or their premium phones to SA typically so it will be interesting to see if they may bring it here.
The Mix Flip is also co-engineered with Leica and has the same AI features as the 14T Series but is it powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, It has a 4780mAh battery and 67W of fast charging.
It has a full 4.01-inch cover display across the whole screen and a 6.8-inch display on the inside. The cover display supports over 100 popular apps according to Xiaomi, and widgets.
It’s refreshing to see full app support on the cover display. It’s such a pity we won’t be seeing it in SA in the near future, if at all. Would love to play with it and compare it to other flip phones I’ve used.
I’m looking forward to the 14T launching soon with the Buds 5 in South Africa in October, with what I’m told would have “competitive” pricing.
I am also excited for the new robot vacuums, the X20 range, which is an update to the X10 Plus, which I reviewed. The Smart Band 9 was also on display, and I received it in my media kit. There is no confirmed launch date yet, just that it won’t launch with the 14T series. I hope to do a review of it soon!
