Amazon’s redesigned Kindle family puts reading comfort at the centre, with thinner, lighter devices, flush-front displays, and new ways to turn pages.

Across Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft, the most interesting change is how the hardware fits around readers’ habits, whether that’s commuting, reading comics, or curling up under a blanket.
A FRESH LOOK ACROSS THE KINDLE FAMILY
Every new Kindle has a flush-front display, removing the raised border around the reading surface. Amazon has reworked the display construction to help make the devices slimmer, while the colour of each device’s housing now extends from front to back.

Depending on the model, finishes include Ube purple, Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, Graphite, and Fig. That edge-to-edge colour refers to the devices’ physical appearance: the Colorsoft remains the option for reading content in colour.
KINDLE: SMALLER, LIGHTER, AND READY TO TRAVEL
The new 6-inch Kindle is Amazon’s most pocket-sized model yet. It includes 16GB of storage and a claimed battery life of up to six weeks, with books opening 30% faster than on the previous release.

For readers who prefer a metal finish, there’s also a 32GB version with a matte aluminium back. Its housing uses 80% recycled aluminium and comes in Alpine Sky Aluminium or Seaglass Green Aluminium.
The appeal is straightforward: a compact reading companion that’s easier to slip into a bag and bring along for those unexpected gaps in the day.
KINDLE PAPERWHITE SHARPENS THE EVERYDAY READING EXPERIENCE
The redesigned Kindle Paperwhite combines a thinner, lighter build with waterproofing, an adjustable warm light, and up to 12 weeks of claimed battery life.

Amazon describes its display as the largest on a Paperwhite yet, with the range’s highest contrast ratio for deeper blacks and clearer text.
The Paperwhite Signature Edition adds an aluminium rear housing, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turns, and pogo pin dock charging.
KINDLE COLORSOFT BRINGS COLOUR TO THE PAGE
For comics, graphic novels, and illustrated travel guides, the new Kindle Colorsoft offers paper-like colour without the harsh glare associated with a tablet.

Its redesigned display uses updated lighting and optical components intended to improve brightness, clarity, and uniformity while preserving detail. Amazon says contrast is also improved for both colour and black-and-white content.
The Colorsoft Signature Edition adds aluminium housing, 32GB of storage, automatic front-light adjustment, double-tap page turns, and pogo pin dock charging.
PAGE-TURN BUTTONS MAKE A WELCOME APPEARANCE
The new accessories could be especially useful for readers who prop up their Kindle while reading. Kindle Click is a Bluetooth page-turning remote compatible with the new lineup and Kindle models released from 2024 onwards.

A magnetic Page-Turn Cover adds physical buttons to the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition. Both also support a new upright charging dock.
Kids versions of all three devices include illustrated covers and 12 months of Amazon Kids+.
WHAT ABOUT SOUTH AFRICAN AVAILABILITY?
Amazon’s announcement lists launch markets including the UK, US, and Australia, but doesn’t include South Africa. It provides no South African release date.
For local readers, the redesigned Kindle family offers plenty to watch: greater portability, clearer displays, and accessories that could make settling into the next chapter a little more comfortable.
