World Rally-Raid Championship gets South African leg

Get ready for high-speed action, South Africa! The World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), one of the most prestigious events in global motorsport, is coming to our shores.

This adrenaline-pumping championship, which kicked off at the 2022 Dakar Rally, features the world’s best racers on two and four wheels — and now South African fans can get a front-row seat!

World Rally-Raid Championship 2025 details for South Africa

The South African Safari, round three of the 2025 W2RC, will take place from May 18 to 24, 2025, right here in the heart of the North West and Limpopo provinces. This epic event follows the legendary Dakar Rally and a round in Abu Dhabi, setting the stage for intense competition on home soil.

Archie Rutherford, CEO of the SA Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC), couldn’t be more excited. He said it’s a proud moment for them, as motorsport enthusiasts and organisers. The SARRC team has worked tirelessly to bring this event to life. Hosting a W2RC round is the ultimate reward for their efforts and a huge boost for the local motorsport scene.

This unmissable event, organised in collaboration with Motorsport South Africa (MSA) and supported by global motorsport governing bodies — the FIA, FIM, and W2RC promotor and Dakar Rally organiser Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) — promises to be one for the history books.

Set against the backdrop of Sun City and Pilanesberg National Park, the race route will take competitors through breathtaking bushveld plateaus, river crossings, and sweeping savannah plains. Whether you’re in Sun City, Thabazimbi, or the surrounding areas, you’ll witness the raw power of rally-raid vehicles tackling some of the most challenging terrains.

South Africa has long been a powerhouse in the rally-raid world, with many of the vehicles competing in Dakar and the W2RC being designed and built right here. Our local talent, machinery, and expertise have put us on the global map, and now we’ll get to showcase it on home ground.

“The SARRC fields some of the toughest competitors in rally-raid, and the growth of our championship — both on a sporting and economic level — has been incredibly positive,” added Rutherford. “We can’t wait to welcome the world’s top teams and their fans to our beautiful country in May 2025.”
