THE CAMERA IS WHERE THINGS GET INTERESTING
Both phones have a 48MP Pro Fusion camera system, so megapixels alone don’t make the iPhone 18 Pro’s upgrade seem significant. Instead, it introduces variable aperture to its 48MP Fusion Main camera, with ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0 settings, unlike the iPhone 17 Pro’s fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture.
Aperture is crucial in photography, as it controls the amount of light entering the camera. The iPhone 18 Pro allows the aperture to open wider for more light or narrow to keep more of a scene in focus, with manual control over aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and a histogram through its new Pro controls.
Video capabilities also improve, with Cinematic mode now reaching 4K Dolby Vision at 60fps, compared to 30fps on the iPhone 17 Pro, and 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse recording added.
THE A20 PRO IS BUILT FOR MORE THAN BENCHMARK BRAGGING
Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro’s A19 Pro chip is powerful, so the challenge was to make its replacement relevant.
The A20 Pro features a new six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The GPU offers up to 40% better performance than the A19 Pro, and memory bandwidth has increased by 50%.
A redesigned vapour-chamber cooling system improves sustained performance by up to 40%. Gaming, video editing, computational photography, and demanding AI tasks require a phone to maintain fast performance, not just impressive peak performance.
The iPhone 18 Pro has more processing power dedicated to on-device AI, with iOS 27, the next generation of Apple Intelligence, and Apple’s new Siri AI experience.
BATTERY LIFE GETS A WELCOME BUMP
Apple has improved the iPhone 18 Pro’s video playback time, now offering up to 36 hours compared to 31 hours on the iPhone 17 Pro. Streamed video time has also increased from 28 hours to 33 hours.
Charging speed has improved too, with the iPhone 18 Pro reaching 50% in about 15 minutes with a 60W adapter, compared to 20 minutes with a 40W or higher adapter. This can be a significant time-saver when you’re running low on battery.
DON’T EXPECT A COMPLETELY NEW-LOOKING IPHONE
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro maintains its successful formula. Both generations feature a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, 3,000-nit peak outdoor brightness, and the same 2622 x 1206 resolution.
The physical dimensions remain unchanged. The iPhone 18 Pro is slightly heavier at 211g, and the colour options are Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy.
A smaller redesigned Dynamic Island displays up to three Live Activities simultaneously, enhancing its functionality.
Storage capacity has also increased, with a 2TB option available, compared to the 1TB option in the iPhone 17 Pro.
SHOULD YOU UPGRADE FROM THE IPHONE 17 PRO?
This is where things get tricky. The iPhone 17 Pro is a very capable phone with a great display, telephoto reach, 18MP front camera, USB 3 connectivity, Wi-Fi 7, and 25W MagSafe charging. These features make it a good choice for most people.
However, creators will find the iPhone 18 Pro more interesting for photography, video, gaming, and AI-heavy workloads.
The variable-aperture camera, expanded manual controls, improved Cinematic video, faster performance, and extra battery life make it a better choice for these tasks.
These improvements are what people tend to appreciate after the initial excitement has worn off.
