Discovery Insure introduces Vitality Drive Sleep Points

Poor sleep may be one of the most overlooked risks on South African roads, according to new research from Discovery Insure.

The insurer analysed four years of sleep, driving behaviour, and accident data from more than 10 000 drivers. The findings suggest that repeatedly missing sleep is one of the strongest predictors of motor vehicle accident risk.

Unlike alcohol impairment, which can be detected with a breathalyser, driver fatigue is often difficult to identify. However, inadequate sleep can affect concentration, reaction time, and decision-making – all essential abilities when driving.

Discovery Insure CEO Robert Attwell says the research indicates that poor sleep may be up to five times more predictive of accident risk than traditional insurance risk factors considered individually.

Sleep Debt Increases Accident Risk

The study found that the greatest danger does not necessarily come from one bad night. Instead, repeatedly sleeping too little creates “sleep debt”, which can build over several days.

Almost 30% of Discovery Insure drivers accumulated some level of sleep debt while driving. Drivers with less than one hour of sleep debt over three consecutive nights had an accident risk up to 36% lower than those who accumulated five or more hours.

Drivers who regularly slept for seven to eight hours were also around 32% less likely to be involved in an accident than those who slept too little. Maintaining a consistent bedtime was associated with an accident risk up to 36% lower, while adequate rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep was linked to a 14% reduction.

Despite these findings, tired driving is still widely underestimated. Discovery cites research suggesting that remaining awake for more than 16 hours can impair driving ability to a level comparable with South Africa’s legal blood-alcohol limit.

Discovery Introduces Sleep Rewards

Following the research, Discovery Insure introduced Vitality Drive Sleep Points in June 2026.

Clients who activate their Vitality Sleep Score and use a compatible wearable device can earn additional Vitality Drive points by maintaining healthy, consistent sleeping patterns.

The initiative expands Vitality Drive’s existing use of behavioural science and telematics to encourage safer driving. Since launching in 2011, the programme has contributed to an 80% reduction in accident fatality rates among Discovery Insure’s safest drivers, according to Attwell.

The message for motorists is simple: road safety starts before getting behind the wheel.

“Every safer journey begins the night before,” says Attwell. “If we can help more South Africans develop healthier sleep habits, we can help more people arrive safely.”
