I’ll say it upfront: I’m lazy. Comfortably, stubbornly lazy. Which is why I’ve been using an iPhone for years. It works, it syncs, I know where everything is. Done.

But iPhones are getting expensive. And there’s an ongoing debate about whether they really deliver as much as everyone thinks they do.
So when I got the chance to review the Oppo Reno15 Pro, I was curious… but sceptical. As a die-hard Apple girlie with an iPhone 14 Pro in hand, I did not expect to be impressed.
Reader, I was impressed. Let me tell you why.
Oppo Reno15 Pro Quick Look
- 6.7-inch AMOLED display
- 120Hz refresh rate
- MediaTek Dimensity 8450 processor
- 12GB RAM
- 512GB internal storage
- 200MP Main rear camera
- 50MP front camera
- 6,200mAh battery
- 80W SuperVooc fast charging
- 5G connectivity
- Dual SIM + eSIM support
- Android with ColorOS
The Design
The first thing I noticed? It’s lighter and thinner than my iPhone 14 Pro. Holding one phone in each hand, I preferred the Oppo immediately. It feels streamlined, modern, and balanced. No clunkiness. No brick-in-the-hand energy.
It slides into pockets and smaller handbags easily, which I appreciate more than I should. And if your iPhone feels like a brick in comparison, you know that’s wild.

The camera bump is noticeable but not ridiculous. It looks deliberate, not awkward. The overall aesthetic is clean and elegant, and would appeal to someone who wants something premium-looking without screaming for attention.
It doesn’t feel cheap. It feels refined.
The Screen
The display genuinely surprised me.
- 6.7-inch AMOLED
- 120Hz refresh rate
- Crisp resolution
- Excellent brightness
It feels brighter than my iPhone, yes, I know, controversial. Everything looks clear and vibrant – photos, videos, scrolling social media, reading long threads.
Watching multimedia content is a joy. The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling buttery smooth. There’s no jitter, no weird lag. It just glides.
Pictures and videos look punchy without being overly saturated. The screen size is perfect for browsing and binge-watching without feeling oversized. Screen experience? Excellent.
The Performance
This phone is fast. Opening apps? Instant. Switching between WhatsApp, Spotify, camera, games? Seamless. Taking quick photos back-to-back? No lag.
It doesn’t stutter. It doesn’t hesitate. It doesn’t overheat, even during long sessions using the camera or gaming.
I’m a heavy phone user. Podcasts while working, audiobooks when not working, music at night, endless posting. The Reno15 Pro handled everything without slowing down.
Performance-wise, I never once felt like I was “waiting” for it.
The Cameras
This is where the Oppo Reno15 Pro flexes. The AI-driven camera is the main selling point, and I get why.

Rear Camera
- 200MP wide angle, 50MP ultra-wide angle, 50MP telephoto
- High-resolution main sensor
- Strong colour reproduction
- Excellent night performance
- Sharp detail
The first photo I took (a simple picture in a blue denim dress) genuinely blew my mind. The colour accuracy was stunning. Blues looked deep and alive without looking fake.
Night photos are impressive. They’re clear, not blurry, and handle light sources well. It does lean into AI processing, but it’s not overwhelming. It enhances rather than distorts.

Front Camera
50MP selfie camera. Sharp. Clear. Great lighting control. I don’t take tons of selfies (you’d think that after two decades I’d have figured out how to take a good selfie; I have not). I sent someone a pic taken with the front-facing camera to compare with one I took on the iPhone. Their feedback?
“Can confirm that it is far sharper, has greater definition, and is much more vivid.”
The built-in AI image generation features are fun. Not always perfectly accurate, but entertaining. You get starter credits to experiment with. Overall? The camera feels flagship-level.
Software Experience
The Reno15 Pro runs Android with ColorOS. What I liked:
- Google apps neatly grouped together
- Easy access to Play Store
- Customisable home screen
- Swipe up to see all apps
- Three-finger swipe screenshot (LOVE this)
There are “Hot Apps” suggestions – apps relevant to what you use – but they’re not forced downloads. Tap to install if you want. It doesn’t feel overloaded with bloatware. You can remove apps from the home screen without uninstalling them.

Things I had to get used to:
- Slightly different keyboard layout
- WhatsApp tabs arranged differently
- No obvious built-in sleep timer
The three-finger screenshot gesture alone deserves applause. No more accidentally locking your phone mid-screenshot. ColorOS feels polished and practical.
Battery Life
This is where the Reno15 Pro really won me over. I’ve already mentioned that my phone works harder than I do. This phone told me to hold its charger.
- 6,200mAh battery
- 80W fast charging
In 10 days, I charged it three times. I went nearly 48 hours between charges while using it as my main phone. Streaming, posting, gaming, browsing, everything.

It doesn’t heat up while charging (unlike my iPhone). I didn’t need a power bank. It comfortably lasts a full day and well into the next. For a heavy user like me? That’s magic.
Other Hardware
- 5G connectivity
- Strong Wi-Fi stability
- Bluetooth connects easily (yes, even to AirPods)
- USB-C charging
- Dual SIM + eSIM support
- eSIM Functionality
The Reno15 Pro supports eSIM, meaning you can activate a digital SIM without needing a physical SIM card. This is fantastic for:
- Travel
- Using separate work and personal numbers
- Switching carriers more easily
You can run a physical SIM and an eSIM together, giving you flexible dual-SIM functionality without constantly swapping cards.
Connectivity-wise, I actually experienced fewer dropouts than on my iPhone using the same Vodacom network.
Is This The (An)droid I’m Looking For?
I did not expect this. If you handed me my iPhone 14 Pro and the Oppo Reno15 Pro and said “Pick one,” I would pick the Oppo without hesitation. Why?
- Lighter and thinner
- Better battery life
- More storage for a similar price (512GB!)
- Impressive camera
- Smooth performance
Bonus points for the O+ Connect app that lets you wirelessly share photos between your Reno 15 Pro and an iPhone since AirDrop and Quick Share are not compatible.

The only things I miss are:
- A physical mute toggle
- A built-in sleep timer
But those are comfort features, not deal breakers. This phone feels premium, performs like a flagship, and competes directly with high-end devices, often at a more reasonable price. It comes in at R21 999 or on Vodacom for R899pm x 36 months.
It’s aimed at users who want outstanding performance without blindly following brand loyalty.
9.2 Score
Pros
- Outstanding battery life
- Flagship-level camera
- Lightweight, premium design
- eSIM support
Cons
- No physical mute toggle
- No obvious system sleep timer
- Slight learning curve if switching from iOS
Final Verdict
The Oppo Reno15 Pro is a powerful, beautifully designed smartphone that genuinely challenges long-standing brand loyalty. With incredible battery life, a stunning camera system, smooth performance, and generous storage, it feels like a true flagship alternative. If you’re sitting on the Apple fence wondering whether it’s worth exploring Android again, this might just be the phone that converts you. And coming from a self-confessed lazy Apple girlie? That says a lot.
