Drones are slowly becoming a must-have for content creators. Whether you’re a filmmaker or just getting started with vlogging, everyone wants that smooth, cinematic aerial footage that levels up your storytelling, and it might be because of how simplified they’ve become.

DJI, known for leading the pack in drone tech, introduced two compact options aimed at creators: the DJI Neo and the DJI Flip. I had the chance to test both of them briefly and was genuinely impressed by the value we can get under R10,000.
Who Are These Drones For?
While both options are made for people who want portability and decent video quality, they’re aimed at slightly different types of creators:
- DJI Neo (from R4,195): Great for lifestyle vloggers, travellers, and anyone new to flying drones.
- DJI Flip (from R9,995): Built for the adrenaline junkies, action sports fans, and creators who love fast, dynamic footage.

Camera Quality

The Neo is lovely for everyday content; it delivers clear visuals and steady video, which works well for travel, lifestyle, and even real estate shoots. But with its smaller 1/2” sensor and F2.8 lens, you’ll notice some shimmer or grain in your footage, especially in low light.
With a bigger sensor, better dynamic range, and that F1.7 lens on the DJI Flip, you get clearer results during sunset. It also gives you slow-mo 4K footage at up to 100 fps. Even though there’s a difference in video specs, I never felt either gave me bad footage. What frustrated me more was the limited battery life.

Battery Life
Battery life was the one thing that really let me down. Here’s what to expect:

The Flip wins this one. That extra time in the air makes a big difference, especially when you’re still trying to learn how to use the drone. Luckily, both drones offer a Fly More Combo option that gives you extra batteries and a charging hub.
Weight & Portability

The Neo is incredibly light, so much so that I could pack it into my everyday bag without even thinking about it. It doesn’t attract much attention, which is great when shooting alone in public places.
The Flip is bigger, but still compact, and I love that it folds up. It feels like something made for rugged conditions. It’s also built to go the distance, but I wouldn’t call the Neo a “toy” either; the propeller guards give it solid protection.

So, Which One Should You Choose?
Go for the DJI Neo if:
- You’re new to drones and want something beginner-friendly.
- You’re mostly creating lifestyle, vlog, or travel content.
- You want something light, easy to carry, and quick to set up.
Go for the DJI Flip if:
- You love speed, action shots, and immersive flying.
- You’re shooting sports, fast-paced content, or need slo-mo 4K.
- You want a bit more flight time and pro-level control.
Both drones are compact, powerful, and creator-focused. The Neo is ideal if you’re after cinematic, polished shots and easy flying. The Flip is your go-to if you’re into adrenaline, fast movement, and more control over your footage. For me, they both have their place, it just depends on the type of content you’re making. But one thing’s for sure: DJI is making it a lot easier (and more affordable) for us to fly.
