LG ultra-thin Evo W6 coming to SA

How thin is too thin for a television? LG seems determined to find out.

The electronics giant has confirmed that its new flagship OLED Evo W6 Wallpaper TV is heading to South Africa, and at just 9.95mm thick, it makes the average flat-screen look positively chunky. For perspective, stack around thirteen bank cards together and you are in roughly the right territory.

Available locally in 77-inch and 83-inch models, the W6 is designed to sit almost completely flush against the wall, creating the impression that the picture itself has somehow been installed directly onto the surface.

And perhaps the most interesting part? There are no cables dangling from the screen.

WHERE DID ALL THE CABLES GO?

Anyone who has ever mounted a TV knows the struggle. You spend money creating a beautifully clean entertainment wall, only to have HDMI cables, power leads, consoles, decoders, and soundbar connections staging a rebellion underneath it.

LG’s solution is the Zero Connect Box.

Instead of plugging your devices directly into the television, everything connects to this separate wireless box. Your gaming console, decoder, HDMI devices, and sound system can all be connected elsewhere in the room.

The box then sends 4K video and audio wirelessly to the W6 from up to 10 metres away, with LG describing the transmission as visually lossless.

That means the box can potentially disappear inside a cabinet, leaving the television itself looking remarkably uncluttered.

“South African lounges have spent years trying to hide the technology in them, not show it off,” says Carol Guedes, Consumer Electronics Sales Head at LG Electronics South Africa. “The W6 takes that further than we have before; the screen goes up, and the clutter that usually comes with it doesn’t.”

Minimalists, rejoice.

MADE FOR SUNNY SA LOUNGES

Of course, being ridiculously thin would not mean much if the picture disappeared the moment afternoon sunlight hit the room.

The W6 uses LG’s Hyper Radiant Color Technology, powered by the company’s Alpha 11 AI Processor Gen3. It has also received Reflection-Free Premium certification from Intertek, aimed at maintaining picture quality in both bright and dark viewing environments.

That could be particularly useful in South African homes, where a sunny lounge and a major Saturday afternoon rugby match often arrive at exactly the same time.

For gamers, there is plenty happening behind that slim screen too. The W6 supports 4K gaming at up to 165Hz, together with NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium.

In other words, it is designed to switch comfortably between blockbuster films, sport, streaming, and high-performance gaming.

AI JOINS THE WATCH PARTY

The W6 runs LG’s latest webOS platform, with a number of AI-powered features built into the experience.

Voice ID can recognise different users and tailor recommendations accordingly, while an AI Concierge helps viewers discover content. Google Gemini integration is also planned, although LG notes that availability will depend on the South African launch configuration.

Security has received attention too. LG Shield provides real-time scanning, while the company’s Re:New programme promises automatic security updates for up to five years.

A FLAGSHIP WITH SOME SERIOUS CREDENTIALS

The W6 arrives with expectations already running high.

LG says its OLED televisions have led global unit sales for 13 consecutive years, according to market analyst Omdia. The W6 was also named Best TV of CES 2026 by UK review outlet HDTVTest, which recognised its combination of picture quality, design, and innovation.

Ultimately, though, the feature people are likely to notice first is still that astonishingly slim profile.

The LG OLED evo W6 will be available in South Africa in 77-inch and 83-inch sizes through selected LG retail partners and the LG Online Store.

Just be warned: once your TV is thinner than the things in your wallet, every other screen in the house may suddenly start looking a little bulky.
