Fourways Mall has undergone a revamp with a host of new store openings, lifestyle experiences and upgrades to its infrastructure.

At a recent media briefing, the mall said its vacancy rate is down from 24% to 13% and has renewed leases for over 150 tenants, taking up 20 783 square meters of retail space.

Fourways Mall is co-owned by Accelerate Property Fund and Azrapart, who teamed up with asset managers Flanagan & Gerard and property managers the Moolman Group to give it a R400-million revamp.

The mall shared a bunch of improvements made to enhance the experience, such as fixing the traffic lights around the mall and addressing compliance issues relating to electric connections.

It added lighting to the parking lot staircases, which improves security; colour coding zones and parking areas for each level ensuring visitors don’t get lost, plus clear signage inside the mall, by the escalators, which carry the colours through.

It also partnered with Admyt for seamless cashless parking, where registered users enter after the cameras scan their licence plate without requiring a physical ticket, as the transaction goes off via the app through linked credit in their wallet or a bank card.

The mall also made improvements to the user experience by adding VIP parking zones for larger vehicles, adding clearly marked drop off zones, safe places to wait for e-hailing services.

It has subsequently welcomed back Spur, and other stores like Beauty on Tapp, Huawei, Levisons, Mochachos, Pet Shop Science and proudly South African brand ZuluZenith.

It also introduced a long-anticipated feature: the airplane that sat stationary for more than eight years, now called Lady Naledi.

The Boeing 727-200 famously made its way across the N3 in Johannesburg from Kempton Park to the mall and was live tweeted at the time, but then nothing came of it, which was further delayed by the pandemic.

It will form part of kiddies play area and offer experiences to visitors, who can go inside the plane, take photos, or take a turn on the attached slide at the back.

The mall also welcomes Match Padel who recently opened eight rooftop courts, with a café and views across the West Rand. Other wellness brands the join in include a Hyrox-affiliated training studio, The Fitz, and Wellness Warehouse.

Additional entertainment and leisure options on the cards include Total Ninja, Urban Playground, Planet Fitness and Bloc 11, which is set to open soon.

The company said it was in talks with R&B Family Foods who owns the Nandos and Rocomamas in Sandton City to open branches in Fourways Mall soon.

Fourways Mall is making use of nodes where similar stores are grouped together, which enhances the shopping experience, such as all sport stores in one area, kiddies’ stores, home and furniture, and banking, etc. It achieved this by relocating stores within the mall.

The mall also fixed a major issue the mall faced: a leaking roof, which impacted multiple stores and banks, but is now fixed and fully waterproof.

It is also busy with a roof solar installation, which will make it the largest for a retailer in South Africa, given that it is the largest mall with over 178 000m2   of space.

Juan Palm, Fourways Mall Centre Manager says: “The strong performance of our new tenants confirms that our leasing strategy is on the right track, and we are delighted to have made significant improvements in the overall shopper experience.”

“We’re committed to improving the quality of life for everyone who visits our mall by housing greater variety, joyful experiences and access to the brands and services they know, love and need,” he adds.
