Samsung unveils Z Fold 7, Flip 7 and new Flip 7 FE

Samsung has unveiled its seventh-generation book style foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, alongside the Flip 7 and brand new Flip 7 FE. The Z Foldable range of devices now feature an improved Armour FlexHinge.

All devices have seven years of Android operating system upgrades as well as security updates.

The most notable thing on the new ultra thin Z Fold 7 is the lack of S-Pen support. The Fold 7 has made massive leaps since the first-get device launched at 17.1mm, and today, it sits at 8.9mm thin when folded. Once open, it is a mere 4.2mm thin.

The Z Fold 7 will go head to head with Honor’s new Magic V5, unveiled in China last week, with a global launch set to take place in Malaysia on 15 July. The Magic V5 is a mere 0.1mm thinner, at 8.8mm when opened, and weighs 217g, while the Fold 7 weighs 215g.

The Fold 7 has an 8-inch super AMOLED display when opened and has the same chipset from the S25 Series, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, and a choice of 256/512GB of storage or 1TB. Its battery is 4400mAh.

Samsung finally brought its S Series level camera to the Fold 7, which now sports a 200MP main shooter, and according to Samsung, it is the first foldable with a 200MP camera. It offers all the Nightography and AI features like audio eraser, as seen on the S25 Series, and a wider angle selfie camera.

As expected, it comes with Galaxy AI and supports DeX mode. The new device introduces Circle to Search for Gameplay and Google Gemini optimised for a large screen. It will ship with Android 16 and One UI 8.

The Z Fold 7 comes in a new Blue Shadow shade, alongside Jet Black and Silver Shadow.

Z Fold 6 vs. Z Fold 7

Samsung South Africa told media at a briefing that it has no plans to charge for its Galaxy AI features in future, which was widely reported when Galaxy AI was introduced in January 2024.

Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE

It pocketable Z Flip 7 now has smaller sibling, the Z Flip 7 FE, in a bid to appeal to a wider audience through a “certain price point”, according to Samsung South Africa.

Both devices have different colours to easily differentiate between them: the Flip 7 comes in Blue Shadow, Jet Black and Coral Red, while the Flip 7 FE comes in either black or white.

The Flip 7 now offers a 4.1-inch full screen cover display that is brighter with a higher refresh rate of 120Hz. It is 6.9-inches when opened.

The cover display also supports Galaxy AI features, and Gemini Live without having to open the phone unnecessarily, as well as its Now Bar and Now Brief features introduced on the S25 range.

The Flip 7 runs on a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset with 256/512GB of storage options and a 4300mAh battery. It has a 50MP rear camera with 2x optical zoom alongside a second 12MP shooter, while the front camera is a 10MP in-display one.

The Flip 7 also supports DeX mode, which means it can be connected to an external monitor and peripherals to use like a PC.

The Flip 7 FE, on the other hand, will have a 50MP camera and Galaxy AI features. While Samsung South Africa did not share a lot of technical info about the device, it is slightly “bigger” than the Flip 7 and has the previous-gen cover display. It will come in 128/256GB storage options.
