Digital media is widely accessible today and almost all homes are well ‘connected’. Laptops, computers, tablets, smart phones, and TVs are our prime source of news, entertainment, social connection, and general information. You’re probably reading this article on an electronic device.

Apple TV+

As a parent, the quest for smarter media choices when it comes to kids’ digital entertainment is a never-ending one, especially in a world cluttered with screens and on-demand streaming services.

I prioritise spending time alongside my three-year-old daughter to guide her content consumption and mould healthy media-use habits.

For the most part of the past three years, my go-to streaming service has been Netflix for shows such as Daniel Tigers Neighbourhood, Peter Rabbit and Twirly-Woos. And to be frank, the controversial and overstimulating Cocomelon features on that list too, which I am glad to say we have established great boundaries with.

With the influx of streaming services accessible in South Africa and the variety of content to choose from, my preference for kid’s TV entertainment has shifted. I consider the time I spend reviewing my kids tv shows and movies an investment in her development and her future.

It takes hours to sift through shows, genres, and storylines but as a concerned parent and media professional myself, it is a top priority. There is no escaping the screen as I’d like to call it, so it’s on us to create good habits and trust around screen-time.

My current go-to streaming service is Apple TV+, which may have been late to the streaming game, but they understand the playbook and primarily feature original content exclusively produced for the platform from award-winning storytellers.

Having a standard for the content you wish to consume and curate for your family is vital. While Netflix and Disney have a more varied content library, Apple TV+ values quality over quantity. Apple TV+ is the first all-original video subscription service, with new content added every month.

Note: Only Apple originals are included in the subscription fee of R124.99 per month, other shows and movies listed are available for rental or purchased from the store.

Before committing to a monthly subscription, users have the option of a 7-day free trial. If you’re a first-time customer who purchases and activates a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Mac, you can enjoy three months of Apple TV+ for free.

Alternatively, choose Apple One – “The best of Apple. All in one.”

Apple One is a bundle subscription for up to six Apple subscriptions for a total monthly price of R179,99 or R229,99 on a family sharing plan, which may be shared with up to five of your loved ones.

These shows on Apple TV+ are among our personal favourites that I highly recommend:

  • Stillwater
  • Rolling with Otis
  • The Velveteen Rabbit
  • Lovely Little Farm
  • The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse
  • Eva The Owlet

Each of these have a simple storyline with deep meaning and lessons that can be applied to a child’s daily life, which I love. Stillwater isn’t just my daughter’s favourite; it’s a masterpiece that I thorough enjoy, too.

The quality of the animation, which is well above average with dreamy visuals compliments the empathy and mindfulness conveyed in every scene. Apple TV+ has released more than 60 original kids titles since its 2019 launch and remains committed to the genre.

There isn’t much content on YouTube, Netflix or Disney that meets my standard for content that can add value to a child’s development but thankfully, Apple TV+ is helping pick up the slack. Once you’ve subscribed to Apple TV+, you’re able to watch on any device, not just a TV.
