SA gets its first real-time forex account

We’re rounding up the latest tech news for this month, featuring South Africa’s first real-time foreign currency account, anti-theft luggage, and two new mid-range smartphones from Huawei and Samsung.

Discovery Bank’s Real-time Forex Account

With international travel easing up, Discovery Bank has introduced a well-timed South African first – a real-time foreign currency account. Customers can instantly open, convert, pay and save in different currencies within “seconds” on the Discovery Bank app.

Whether you need pounds, euros or dollars, you can purchase these currencies at any time without waiting several business days like you do with traditional banks. The app supports paying and receiving in more than 60 currencies.

And there are options to get either a physical card or a virtual one, which can be loaded on to a smart device to use when travelling outside of South Africa. The fee for each currency account is either R15 or R30 per month, and is free for higher-tier accounts.

Thule Tact

Swedish brand Thule has a new range of anti-theft luggage called Thule Tact that prevents travel scams. Due to the increase in radio frequency identification (RFID) skimming, in which criminals pick pockets digitally, using concealed scanners to steal credit card and passport data, Thule has come up with a way to protect you. The Thule Tact line-up consists of a waist bag, sling bag and backpacks. Each bag has a built-in RFID-blocking pocket to protect cards, passports and driver’s licences.

The water-resistant bags are made with reinforced fabrics to prevent ripping and have zips that are lockable. The bags are lightweight and have padded laptop compartments and multiple interior pockets for organisation and easy access.

They are suited for local and international use. The waist pack costs R2 199 and the slingback costs R2 699.
