Honor launches first foldable and AI phone in SA

Honor has launched its new flagship Magic V2 foldable in South Africa, alongside the AI-powered Magic6 Pro.

City Press was in attendance at MWC Barcelona with it unveiled and showcased the new Magic series.

The devices have officially launched in SA, and will be available from 2 April onwards, and on the Vodacom network a week earlier.

The Magic V2 is the thinnest foldable to date, measuring 4.7mm when opened and 9.9mm when closed, and weighing a mere 231g, making it lighter than regular phones like the iPhone 15 Pro and Galaxy S24 Ultra. In comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 weighs 253g.

Honor says it managed to keep the size and weight down of the V2 with its 5000mAh dual silicon-carbon battery averaging 2.72mm thin, which is the size of a credit card.

It is held together by Honor’s new Titanium Hinge that it says can withstand 400 000 folds, or roughly opening and closing it 100 times per day.

Honor says its durability guarantees the lifespan of the foldable for “up to 10 years”. It features 120Hz dual screens with a 7.92-inch inner display and a 6.43-inch cover display, and over 90% screen-to-body ratio.

The V2 has multitasking capabilities and can run two apps side-by-side, and supports Parallel Space, which lets you run a virtual second phone on the device to keep your personal and business life on one device.

The camera system is made up of a trio of lenses: 50MP wide; 50MP ultra-wide and 20MP telephoto. It has a 16MP selfie-cam, and both cameras shoot 4K videos.

The Magic V2 is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and runs on Android 13 with the MagicOS 7.2 overlay. A kickstand cover is included in the box.

Honor: AI-powered Magic6 Pro

The flagship Magic6 Pro, unveiled at MWC Barcelona, has since taken top honours by being named “the ultimate camera smartphone” with a gold DXOMark score of 158 points, the highest score awarded to date. It beat other flagships from Apple, Google, Huawei, Oppo and Samsung.

Its Falcon camera system features a trio of lenses: a 180MP periscope telephoto lens, 50MP ultra-wide and 50MP wide-angle that introduces AI Motion Sensing Capture to get the best action shot. It is complemented by a 50MP selfie-camera with 3D facial recognition.

Other AI features on the new flagship, which runs on MagicOS 8.0 include Magic Portal for one-click drag and drop multitasking; the ability to learn from user habits to suggest apps and Magic Capsule.

The Magic Capsule feature is like Apple’s Dynamic Island notifications that appear on top of the screen in a pill-shaped cut-out but uses AI eye-tracking to check notifications in supported apps. Honor says it knows the difference between a glance and an intentional look.

The Magic6 Pro’s flagship-worthy specs include a 6.8-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 5000nits brightness; and runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Battery life is a massive 5600mAh with 100W SuperCharge and 66W wireless charging support.

Prices and availability

The Honor Magic V2 foldable will retail for R39 999 and comes in a vegan black leather finish, while the Magic6 Pro will retail for R27 999 and comes in Epi green or black. It will be available from 2 April onwards, but a week earlier on Vodacom.
